On AV it makes sense to not run background monitor at all… that is if you can manage to survive with that. :) I do but that’s me.

I don’t use download managers in recent years. I think they outlived their purpose of saving files from poor browsers and connections.

On browser I’d prefer Opera. It doubles as good email client and plenty more. Consolidating functions makes sense for limited resources of netbook.

On audio players – there are some much lighter ones than those named. I don’t listen to music on computer much but I like 1by1, very light and convenient.

Interesting to know that you do not feel a need for download managers. That’s the first thing I turn to if I am trying to download a large file or multiple files. These download managers integrate so seamlessly with the browser that there is nothing additional required on my part, and am sure that the download would complete in the shortest possible time, and I do not have to worry about broken connection. If I am trying to download a file that is close to a gig in size, I can just start that in night, and instruct my download manager to turn off the computer once download is complete. Really easy.

I agree that Opera has some additional features, but I am completely partial towards Google Chrome. Give it a shot – you will know what you are missing. For a full featured Internet suite with email client and all, I would go with SeaMonkey.

The audio players that you have mentioned are indeed light in size. However, one thing we need to remember is that netbooks just have some lesser power than a normal PC. I would use these audio players on a P1 or P2 PC, but on a netbook I can live with BS.Player. It has all the features of the other popular players. supports all popular formats, can be skinned, and still has a small memory foot print. This should work well for a netbook.

You should also try SSuite Office for a free office suite. They have a whole range of office suites that are free for download.

Their software also don’t need to run on Java or .NET, like so many open source office suites, so it makes their software very small and efficient.
