Here are 10 free alternatives to Mozy that provide free online storage and free online backup. All these Mozy alternatives provide both paid options, as well as free option. And in most of the cases, Free option of these online storage services is much better than free option offered by Mozy.
Mozy is one of the most popular online backup services, but users seem to be getting away from Mozy. It could be because of advent of other free online storage services, wide criticism of 2.0 upgrade of Mozy, and abrupt pricing increase (which seem to have left lot of disgruntled users).
But the good news is that there are lot of good (and better) alternatives to Mozy. Here is a list of 10 of those.
Dropbox
Dropbox is one of the best alternative to Mozy. I was using Mozy a long time back, and then I tried Dropbox. And since then, I have not looked back. Apart from the fact that it keeps my data in sync across all computers even with different OS, it also offers much more free storage space than Mozy (yes, check out how to get free extra storage space on Dropbox). Apart from that, it is damn easy, and trustworthy. I have had my computer crashed thrice, and Dropbox was always able to safely recover all my data.

Windows Live Mesh
Windows Live Mesh is everything that I can ask for in a free online backup service, and then some. It offers 5 GB free online storage. It syncs data across multiple computers (including PC and Mac), lets you access all your files online, and even lets you remotely connect to your computer from a browser. It makes use of SkyDrive to offer 5GB online storage. It also lets you sync program settings on multiple computers, like, IE favorites. Frankly, if I was not so partial towards Dropbox, Windows Live Mesh would have been at top of this list of Mozy alternatives.

SugarSync
SugarSync is another interesting online backup and online storage service. While researching for this article, I found that SugarSync has recently upgraded their free storage plan to provide 5 GB free online storage. Apart from that, it also provides syncing of file across multiple computers and devices, online backup, and online access to files. This is another great Mozy alternative.

IDrive
IDrive is another free online backup and online storage service that provides free real-time automatic backup. IDrive is especially easy to setup. When you install IDrive, it automatically shows you recommendations around what are important folders on your PC that need to be backed up. It keep monitoring files for changes, and automatically backs up those changes. Free version of IDrive offers 5GB free online backup and storage. This makes it a great free alternative to Mozy.

ADrive
Adrive is a lesser known online storage service, but it actually provides the most free online storage space than anyone else in this list. It offers 50 GB online storage space for free. However, the big drawback is that free plan does not provides any desktop client for automatic backup. So, you have to periodically upload files and folders that you want to store online. I personally think ADrive is a good online storage option that can be clubbed with one of the services that are in this list. For your important documents, you can use any of the automatic online backup service. And for your songs, videos, and photos, you can just upload them to ADrive, as they don’t change often.

Wuala
Wuala is another of my favorite Mozy alternative. It provides 1GB of free online storage space. However, it gives you an option to get up to 100 GB of free online storage space by trading your hard drive space. Let’s say you offer 50 GB of your hard drive space to Wuala. Then Wuala would use that space to store its own data. The free storage space that you get in return is equivalent to storage space that you offer * percentage of time you are online per day. Like, if you are online 12 hours per day, and have offered 50 GB of hard drive space to Wuala, then you get 25GB extra hard drive space for free.

SafeCopy is another free Mozy alternative that provides free online storage space. The free account offers 3GB of free online storage, and works with Windows, Mac, and iPhone. The interesting part of SafeCopy is the paid plan that charges just $50 for a full year of 200 GB online storage space.

SpiderOak is a free automatic online backup service that works on Windows, Mac, and Linux. It also offers 2GB free online storage, and keeps your data in sync across multiple computers. SpiderOak also offers a free referral program that gives you 1GB extra storage space for each friend you refer. Your friend would also get 1 Free GB extra. You can get max 3 additional GB for up to 5GB of free online storage space for free. This is the most liberal referral program that I have seen.

Syncplicity is a free Mozy alternative that is especially geared towards backing up all your documents. It works with all your computers, and is even integrated with Google docs. Free version offers 2GB free space, with sync capability on up to 2 computers. I wasn’t able to find any referral program on its website to get additional storage space free on Syncplicity.

ElephantDrive is last in this list as the free version works with 1 PC only, so this basically rules out syncing across multiple computers. The free account offers 2 GB of free online storage space. It does offers automatic and real time backup of your data. If you somehow do not like any of the free online backup service from the list above, you can try out this free Mozy alternative.
