MEGA is a free online file hosting service which was recently started by Kim Dotcom, who was the owner of MegaUpload and it offers a free online storage space of 50 GB. This new cloud storage service really lives up to its name because you get 50GB of upload space, while the bandwidth allowed for downloads is currently not being told for free account. Registration isn’t necessary if you want to upload and store documents and files.
What you see in the image above is the homepage of MEGA, and the red button that you see in the image above is everything that you’ll need to click in order to initiate the file upload process. Even though there’s no need to register, you do have that option if you want to have better control over the data that you decide to upload.
Key Features of MEGA Free Online Storage Service:
- 50 GB of storage for free accounts with undisclosed bandwidth.
- Safe harbor server locations, not located in the United States.
- Co.Nz domain name decreases the chances of seizure by authorities.
- Exchange messages with other MEGA users, create contact lists.
- SSL encryption of data during transfers and encryption during storage.
- HTML5 interface, doesn’t require Flash to run or to be used.
- No registration required for upload, get 50GB storage space when you register.
We’ve all heard and some of us even suffered data loss when MegaUpload was closed down. A lot of people had genuine legal data stored there, and MEGA has now taken steps to prevent or at least decrease the chances from it happening again. Selective server locations and avoidance of .com, .net domain names is one of the ways to defend against that. Remember that Pirate Bay also recently made a switch to .se domain. Keep in mind that sharing illegal content is illegal, and we do not encourage it.
How to Upload and Store Files Online with MEGA?
Like we already mentioned you don’t have to register if you are interested in storing your files online for free with MEGA. Just open up the homepage and click on the MEGA button. File open window will appear.
MEGA is of course cloud based, like so many other free file hosting services are these days. Files that you upload and store will be encrypted. On top of that, to prevent data lose, two copies of files are gonna be kept, so that if something happens to one of the server locations, there’s a backup available. Notice in the left sidebar the options for opening up Trash, Contacts, and Inbox where other registered users of this free file hosting service can send you messages. All the way at the bottom of the window you have an option for keeping track of file transfers, which can’t be seen in the image above.
Even though for now MEGA seems to be a bit simplistic, it’s still in beta, so there’s room for improvement. If everything that’s advertised, that we mentioned above is true, then service offered by MEGA has a great future. All those worried about security and privacy of their data should give MEGA a try. Paid account available for more space and bandwidth. Free service.
