GetWindowText is a very simple application that allows users to copy text from any window. The most important thing about this application is that it is helpful to get those text contents that you can’t copy paste, like an error message, name in title bar, navigation pane items, or a Windows pop up message. So instead of writing a text (that you can’t copy) manually on Notepad or in other text editor software, you can quickly grab that text using GetWindowText.

Only a simple drag n release action is needed from mouse cursor to get text from almost any opened window. It supports static, edit, groupbox controls, etc. and shows grabbed text on its interface.

As you can see in the above screenshot, navigation pane’s text contents are copied on text box available in GetWindowText.

This application would be especially useful when you get some error message with complicated codes which you need to search online. Instead of writing the error message manually, you can fetch that text using GetWindowText and use it.

How To Use GetWindowText To Copy Text Contents From A Window?

GetWindowText is a portable application that you can download using the link available at the end of this review. It comes in a zip file which is just 24.2 KB in size. Extract the zip archive and double-click the extracted application file to open its interface.

On its interface, there will be a GetWindowText icon available as highlighted in screenshot below. You simply need to click that icon, hold, and move mouse cursor to the required area. Immediately after moving cursor to that area, its text contents will be copied on the text box automatically. A very simple example of this application’s use can be seen in screenshot available below:

After fetching the text, you can release the mouse. Now you have the text grabbed from required window, which you can use as you desire. If you want to save the grabbed text as a text file, then you need to copy paste the text in some text editor. This is the shortcoming with this application that it can’t be used to directly save the copied text.

Some Key Features Present In This GetWindowText Application are:

  • It is helpful to grab those text contents that are not possible with cut/copy action.
  • A simple drag n release action is needed to grab the text contents.
  • Supports combo box, SysTreeView32, list views to read the whole text contents.
  • It is portable and a lightweight application.
  • Supports both x32 and x64 operating systems.
  • Completely free.
