Sometimes I get fax of documents from my clients, and I have to modify some text in them. In the absence of a good OCR (Optical Character Reconition) Tool, I sometimes end up again typing up that document to modify it. Online OCR is a free web application that will make it really easy for me to extract text from faxes, and scanned documents.
OnlineOCR.net is a free web-based OCR service that allows you to convert scanned paper documents (including multipage files), faxes, photographs or digital camera captured images into editable and searchable electronic documents including Adobe PDF, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Rtf, Html and Txt.  If you already have a scanned document, then you can directly upload that on Online OCR’s website, and it will let you download the converted document. If you just have a hard copy of a document(like a fax), and do not have a scanner then you can take photograph of that document. You can then upload that photograph to Online OCR, and Online OCR will be able to convert that too.
Online OCR does a really good job at conversion. Converted documents look exactly like the original – tables, columns, bullets and graphics.

  2. Hello,

I've experienced similar problems when working with scans and PDFs and I've also looked around for a good OCR tool. I found a really good online OCR tool from CVISION. It's really easy to use, there's no downloading at all, and it's free. It can handle PDF, TIFF, JPG, and BMP. Also there's no limit to how many pages you can convert. You should definitely check it out.

  3. I am a mac user…downloaded the OCR converter..when I convert Image–>PDF..a pdf is generated ..OK..but, when I convert to a text file….a file is generated…but, its not readable…I don’t know how I can get a normal text file as output.

  4. Is there any online OCR tool that gives accurate results (99% -100%) for hand wriiten fonts also. I have scanned files (.gif image) contains text in different fonts. I almost tried with all the available tools, but I was not satisfied with the results. Could you please suggest?

    Thanks,
    Sekhar

  5. While searching for a free online OCR service to text my image documents, i found that most of the online services give roughly the same accuracy given high image quality. Almost all of them fails for handwritten text and as mentioned by @Sekhar, you can not get 100% accuracy unless you have super quality 400 DPI and letter height not less than 15px. I also would recommend i2OCR. The service has no limitations, no ads, 33+ langaues, multiple image formats, and on top of that the user interface is super clean.

  6. We would like to acquire software that will read the details of a license plate off a photograph taken with a hand held digital camera. Approximately 500 photographs are taken every day and we want the details transcribed from the photographs quickly and directly into an Excel sheet. Could you please advise us? Thanks JWM
