Wiki Reader is a free Wikipedia app for Mac OS X that lets you browse Wikipedia directly from your desktop. Its is just what its name suggests: the application only allows you to view Wikipedia directly with this app instead of opening up the web site on a browser.

Wikipedia has become one of the most important resource of information for a quick reference about anything and everything. This Wikipedia app for Mac makes it easier for you to interact with Wikipedia in simple and streamed interface.

When you open up the application you will be greeted with the interface as seen below. The window is divided into two parts: the left side of the window where you are supposed to search and the right side of the window where the article shows up. Just below the search bar you will have a list of suggested articles, click on any one of these to see them on the right side, so that you read them.

You can look up the history by clicking on the history button which is on the lower left corner of the application window as seen above.

When you open up  preferences for this application you will see the window as seen below in the screenshot.   The application lets you set default languages, in which you expect the results to show up; this is a handy feature. You can reset the history details by clicking on the reset button as shown below. And at last you can change the font size according to you needs.

This free application is an excellent reader for Wikipedia, you can directly search from within the application, just start typing and the articles related to that topic will start appearing below the search bar. The application is meant to be a simple site specific reader, so that you can read articles on wiki in a simple and straight forward interface.

It does not have special features like note taking etc. One thing that it does differently which I like is its really cool ability to show images that are associated with an application in an awesome slideshow. This application supports full screen mode and when you click on pictures to start a slideshow the application will automatically switch to fullscreen mode as shown in the first screenshot in the article.

How to install Wiki reader:

Wiki reader is available for free on the Mac App Store. To download it just click here, this will redirect you to the webpage of the Mac App Store and follow instructions to download and install or you can search for Wiki reader in the App Store directly.

Verdict:

Wiki reader is not a feature rich application it is just a simple Reader for Wikipedia, a few features like the ability to add notes, highlight, and bookmark could make this application better. Lets hope the developers adds these features in this application in future versions. Anyway for what it is this application is good enough, as it is completely free.
