Here is a list of 3 free online encyclopedia websites. You can use any of these free encyclopedia websites to look out for knowledge about different things which may or may not be related to the same field.  In case you are wondering what an encyclopedia is then don’t worry, it is not something complicated. An encyclopedia is basically a reference work (book or in any other form) which includes a summary of different concepts. An encyclopedia can be either about all fields or a particular field.

So let’s get started with each of these free encyclopedia websites one by one.

1. Wikipedia:

Wikipedia is the world’s most famous and largest encyclopedia on the Internet. Wikipedia is famous for having articles over almost all possible topics. As for the numbers, Wikipedia has more than 4.7 million articles in English language. If I talk about language, then Wikipedia is available in 287 languages worldwide while 11 languages have more than 1 million articles each.

To read article on any topic, you simply need to head over to Wikipedia and search for it using the search bar. If the topic searched by you is ambiguous then Wikipedia displays list of related articles. You can then click on the one which you want to read. While reading, you might come across some words or terms which have a particular article about them on Wikipedia. In such situation, you will find them being hyperlinked to their corresponding individual page. Each of the articles also have a table of contents and quick facts section so that you can have a quick overview of the whole article.

Besides searching for articles and reading about them, Wikipedia has different things to offer such as Today’s Featured Article, In the News, Did You Know?, On this Day, Today’s Featured Picture, etc.

2. Encyclopedia Britannica:

The Encyclopedia Britannica is the oldest publishing encyclopedia, in English language, on Earth. It was published for the first time in 1768 and consisted of 3 volumes. As of now, Britannica has evolved to 15th edition and 32-volume set. Britannica website has a search bar where you have to enter the term which you want to search. For the selected topic, you can read the complete article and check images, videos, interactive, quizzes, and lists. All these extra resources are available on the same article page.

Britannica lets you comment, share, and print any of the articles. For each article, it also suggests more articles which you can read. Besides this, Britannica has all the articles categorized into different categories. You can go to any category to read corresponding articles.

3. Reference.com:

Reference

The last online encyclopedia website in the list of Reference.com. Just like above two, you can use it to search for any word or topic of your choice. Go to the website, enter your search query, and start exploring the result. On the results page, you will see the left sidebar with following options: Related Searches, Definition and Nearby Words. It also includes various options related to English language. You can check different facts, trivia, and riddles about it.
