This tutorial will show you how to get email notification for new GitHub repository created by anyone. You can now easily get notified of all the new repositories created by any specific GitHub user or organization by an email. This is possible with the help of “IFTTT“. You can create a simple IFTTT applet and then connect any email service (like Gmail) and GitHub to start getting email notifications automatically when a repository is created. As IFTTT is a free service, you can get as many notifications as you want.

Sometimes, it is possible that you miss any repository created by a user or organization you follow on GitHub. So, getting email notifications can help you stay in touch with them always. It also helps you save time from opening GitHub on your PC each time you want to check for a new repository.

We have also covered some other useful tutorials using which you can get email notification for new GitHub issue in your repository, new pull request opened for GitHub repository, etc.

How to Get Email Notification for New GitHub Repository Created by Anyone:

First, open the homepage of IFTTT and create a new account or login to our existing account. After that, you can see a “My Applets” tab at the top which you need to click to proceed. Then you can proceed to create the applet by selecting the “New Applet” button.

Now, the first thing you would need to do is configure the trigger of the IFTTT applet. For that, you would need to search and select the trigger service as “GitHub”. Once you do that, it will display all the triggers associated with the GitHub service. You now need to select “New repository by a specific username or organization” as the applet trigger.

After you do that, it will open the “Trigger Fields” window on which you can enter any GitHub username you want. Do note that the username will be used by IFTTT to send you email notifications when a new repository is created by that particular user or organization. So, enter the username carefully.

When you’re done with the applet trigger, you can go ahead and configure the applet action part. To do that, simply select any of the email services. To explain how this method works, I will use Gmail in this tutorial. After selecting the applet action service, you can see all the available actions among which you would need to select “Send yourself an email”.

As soon as you do that, it will ask you to fill some applet action fields including the subject of the email notification, email body, and also include the attachment URL if you want from the new repository. For that, all you need is to click on the “Add Ingredients” button and choose whatever parameter you want.

Once done, just save the applet and you’re done. Now, every time the user creates a new repository, you will automatically receive an email notification.

Closing Words:

So, this is how you can get email notification for new GitHub repositories created by any user or organization you specify. IFTTT makes it very easy for you, as all you gotta do is create the applet and then you will start receiving the email notifications automatically. Just follow the simple steps explained in this tutorial to create the applet.
