PixEditor is a free Chrome app that lets you add cool retro and vintage effects to your digital photos. It’s a nice free app that offers a wide collection of black and white and colorful photo effects to give a perfect retro look to your photos. Though there are many modern effects you can add to your photos, giving an old, vintage touch still make many hearts happy. Looking at the old photos always gives a sense of history and makes the great memories come alive.
If you have tried your hands on Pixlr-o-matic, you won’t find it difficult to use PixEditor. In fact, the app is so simple and easy to use that even a beginner can use it without any problem. All it takes is a target photo and nothing else. Once you browse photo you want to apply effects on, you can test various effects shown in a strip with mouse clicks and save changes to the photos with the desired effect. Let’s have a detailed look on PixEditor.
Apply Retro or Vintage Effects on Photos using PixEditor:
PixEditor can be downloaded and installed in your Chrome browser using the link given at the end of this article. Once the app is installed, you can find it on the new tab page of your Chrome browser and launch it from there. The app’s home page consists of nothing, but a short description, a “Choose File” button, and some sharing tools.
You can browse photo you want to work with from your system using the “Choose file” option. PixEditor accepts photos in JPEG, GIF, and PNG formats only. Plus, it doesn’t accept photos which are greater than 2 MB in size.
Once the photo is loaded, the app enters the editing mode and displays a strip at the bottom containing options to choose black and white, colorful, or miscellaneous effects. Each of these category displays a subcategory of effects, which lets you apply and test effects on your photos with a single mouse click.
If you choose the “Black and White” option, you will get all black and white vintage effects, including expose, grain, greenish, heavydamage, light, lomo, oldpicture, shade, silver, sketch, slide, stained, etc.
And if you choose the “Color” option, you will get all colorful vintage and retro effects, including expose, freckles, grain, light, moldy, nightmare, rust, sand, sepia, shade, sketch, etc.
Apart from that, there are some miscellaneous effects as well. These are named as 1950, bumps, colorlense, deepshadow, rainbow, sunshine, and so on. You can try as many effects on your photo as you want and once you are satisfied, press the “Save Changes” button to save changes to the photo.
PixEditor will open a new page on pressing the button where you will see a larger preview of the photo, along with options to share the photo on various social networks. To download the photo, simply make a right-click anywhere on the photo and choose “Save image as…” option.

The Final Verdict:
PixEditor is a nice free app to apply vintage effects on digital images. It’s extremely easy to use, intuitive, and on top of all available for free. However, it doesn’t work with high-quality pictures which are more than 2 MB in size. This is the only shortcoming I found in the app, rest everything works well.
