This article covers a free real-time global natural hazard monitor software for Windows 10. Earth Alerts is a free Windows software that gives you an overview of global weather activities covering volcanoes, cyclones, tsunamis, earthquakes, and other natural hazards with real-time alerts.
With this software, you can track global weather activities including current conditions, forecasts, and satellite imagery. It has a dedicated section for US where you can monitor severe weather conditions covering thunderstorms, tornado’s, wildfires, landslides, and other natural events with NWS weather/hazard alerts and radar/satellite imagery. The software has Google Earth integration that provides high-resolution imagery of events. Furthermore, the software can monitor selected locations and deliver desktop notifications for active alerts. You can also set up email and SMS alerts as well.
Free Real-time Global Natural Hazard Monitor: Earth Alerts
To track real-time global natural hazards and get alerts, download the Earth Alerts setup file from the website and install it on your PC. In the first run, the software asks you to enter a custom location; the location search might not work correctly in the beginning so I recommend you to skip that step. After that, it asks you to enter a Google Cloud Platform API Key. This is necessary to search custom locations and monitor respective events with Google Earth.
Use your Google account and generate a geocoding API here. Once you have the API key, go to the (Earth Alerts) Settings and click the “Applications” option from the top. On the next screen, you get an option to enter the API key at the bottom right corner, simply paste the API key there. After adding the API key, you would be able to search custom locations by name (globally) or Zipcode (for US only).
The interface of this software might seem a little outdated but it’s simple to navigate. All the different sections of the software are listed at the top whereas all the natural events and locations are listed on the left. You can pick any event or location to get more details. In the case of an event, it shows you all the related events with reports, news, map, and summary. Whereas, in case of a location, you get a serve weather outlook along with radar view and Google Earth.
Enable Weather Alerts
If you want to get alerts for severe weather and natural hazards, you can enable that from the “Notify” section. You can enable visual and sound desktop notifications for global weather or for selected locations. You can also customize the alerts for specific natural hazards such as earthquakes, vocals, wildfires, etc. If desktop notifications are not good enough, you can configure email alerts and SMS alerts for the same as well.
Earth Alerts is a useful software that helps you monitor global weather and track natural hazards in real-time. It provides you information about the natural events along with stats and views if possible. The alert feature is really handy. You can configure email and SMS alerts for particular locations; this software keeps tracking those locations and alerts you in real-time when conditions are severe.
