Here are Some of the Features of AVG Free Antivirus 2012:

Reduced Memory Consumption: As per AVG, the AVG suite earlier used to run 16 processes, and now runs only 11 processes. This means it uses considerably lesser memory than the previous versions of AVG. This is very good, as it means you PC won’t feel sluggish while AVG is running in the background.

Monitor memory consumption of browsers: Another interesting feature that have been added in AVG Free 2012 is that it also monitors memory consumption of browsers (IE, Firefox, Chrome). When browsers start consuming lot of memory (because of lot of tabs being open), it suggests you to close the browser, and then start it again. I am not sure why AVG thought of including this as a feature in their free antivirus software, but nevertheless, it is a good feature.

Reduced Hard Drive Space consumption: AVG has also reduced the size of virus signature file by as much as 40%. This means that it takes much lesser hard drive space than previous versions. Personally, I am not very bothered by hard drive space usage, because hard drives have been becoming bigger and cheaper; and I can anytime optimize hard drive performance.

Detect Fake Antivirus: This is my personal favorite in AVG Free Antivirus 2012. It detects fake antivirus, and blocks them. Similarly, it blocks ransomware as well.

Improved LinkScanner: Another notable improvement in AVG 2012 is improved Linkscanner. It has now better detection of malicious websites, and also detects dynamic code.

VirusTotal is one of the most popular free online virus scanner. It uses 43 different antivirus software to scan your files. You can upload files up to 20 MB in size. It also allows SSL upload. The best feature of VirusTotal is that also allows you to scan a URL. So, you can scan a file online, even before downloading it. You can also use VirusTotal desktop client, in case you don’t want to use online service.

VirScan

VirScan is one of the best free online virus scanners. It scanned my file with 37 different antivirus software. It can also scan zipped files, and even password protected zip files. You can zip 10 files together, and upload them together. It also limits the file size to 20MB.

Jotti

Jotti is another of my favorite free online virus scanner. It uses 19 antivirus software to scan files. We also covered Jotti desktop client earlier.

FilterBit

Filterbit is another free online file scanner. It also lets you upload file of up to 20MB, and uses 10 antivirus software to scan files.

Multi-Engine Antivirus Scanner

Multi-Engine Antivirus scanner uses 16 free antivirus software. Apart from scanning files, it can also scan URL. It can scan file of up to 20MB if you upload that, and can scan file of up to 10 MB via URL.

VirusChief

VirusChief scans the files that you upload, but does not scans URL. When I uploaded a file, it scanned it with just 6 antivirus software.

Before we go further, here is a brief about Jotti:

Jotti is a free online file scanning service where you can upload a file, and Jotti will scan that file with multiple antivirus software for free.

Online version of Jotti is pretty good, but it has a few limitations, like, you can upload one file at a time (of course, you can upload multiple using multiple browser windows), and you can scan only files.

JottiQ, the desktop client for Jotti, takes care of these problems.

(Also check out VirusTotal desktop client, and VirusTotal Chrome plugin).

JottiQ comes with an extremely easy to use interface. To scan a file, you just need to drag and drop it to JottiQ interface. JottiQ also lets you add a context menu entry, so that you can just right click on a file, and choose option to add to JottiQ. You can add more than one file at a time. Once you are done adding files, you can press the icon to start scanning. JottiQ will upload files to Jotti, and will report the results to you. Note: You need to be connected to internet while using this, as the actual scanning is still done by Jotti online malware scanner.

Jotti shows you results of scanning in a summarized format, and you can also click on that to see virus scanning results of each separate antivirus software.

These features make it extremely easy to scan any suspicious file using Jotti.

Frankly speaking, this isn’t really what excited me about this desktop client for Jotti :)

What really excited me is the option to scan running processes. JottiQ comes with a built-in option that you can press to add all the running processes to JottiQ list, and JottiQ will use Jotti to scan all your running processes with various antivirus software. This is a really useful feature as you cannot scan your processes by directly using Jotti online service. Also, JottiQ makes it extremely easy, as you can add all your processes by just pressing a button.

All in all, JottiQ is a very well thought of and well designed software, that can be super useful in many situations. Download JottiQ here.

Note: JottiQ is NOT a replacement for your antivirus software. You can use it to just selectively scan those files that you think might be suspicious and your antivirus is claiming that the file is clean. Also, JottiQ also suffers from the limitation of scanning the files that are less than 20MB in size (this is a limitation imposed by Jotti).

There is a similar popular service called VirusTotal that does similar service, and there really isn’t any advantage that Jotti offers over VirusTotal. However, if you are not able to use VirusTotal for some reason, or want a second opinion, Jotti is a good alternative for VirusTotal.

Services like Jotti and VirusTotal come handy if you have a file that looks suspicious to you, but your antivirus software does not shows any virus in that. In that case, you can just upload that file to Jotti, and Jotti will scan that file for free using multiple antivirus, and will let you know if any of them report a virus in the file.

Jotti is extremely simple to use. You do not need to download anything, or register with Jotti. Just upload the file, and Jotti will report you the results of virus scanning. Jotti has a limitation of 20MB file size (VirusTotal has same limitation).

To test this service, I uploaded a file of 20MB, and within a few minutes Jotti finished scanning it with all the virus scanners, and showed me the result (see screenshot above for results of scanning). I do not have a virus infected file (that I am aware of;) ) so, I am not able to test its efficiency in finding viruses. However, because the virus scanning is actually done by the popular antivirus software listed above, I would assume a pretty good level of detection.

However, one thing I miss in Jotti is some of the popular antivirus software, like, McAfee, Norton, and Trend Micro. VirusTotal does uses these as well.

Nevertheless, as I mentioned earlier, Jotti is still pretty good as it uses many antivirus software.

Note: Jotti is not a replacement for your antivirus software, as it can be used for only selectively scanning for files. I highly recommend that you have a good free antivirus software installed on your system.
