New Features in Firefox 7

Firefox developers used Memshrink technology for the first time in the new beta. And the use of this technology brought a dramatic change with remarkable lower memory usage. According to Mozilla developer Nicholas Bethercote, Firefox 7 uses less memory comparing to the last three versions. When we used the beta version, we also noticed that Firefox 7 can cut memory usage by about fifty percent. You won’t notice any big memory usage if you keep using Firefox overnight and you will be able to free up memory by closing tabs which was not possible earlier.

The new Firefox Beta is available for Windows, Linux, Mac and Android users. It also comes with a new rendering backend for speeding up canvas operations.     Attracted by the claim that Firefox 7 beta uses less memory, I checked the memory usage of Firefox 6 (70 Mb) with one tab open, then downloaded and installed the 7 beta and ran it with the same tab open. The result? It was using 84 Mb of RAM. For my PC and Firefox install it would appear that the “uses less memory” claim doesn’t apply.

      @John: Thanks for that feedback. I would not know what caused memory usage to go high, but it is definitely useful to know that Firefox 7 might not reduce memory usage for everyone.

    FF7 ram usage doubled for me – not half! 132MB with one tab open is ridiculous!
