WordPress 3.1 is in pre-beta right now, and I got a chance to read about some of the new features that are coming in WordPress 3.1. And, I am impressed. This release seems to be one of the most thought after release of WordPress, and adds some of the things that I had desired since I started using WordPress.
You can read more details about the features here, but I will give you a quick rundown of what I love:
Easier Internal Linking in WordPress: Bloggers like to link to other posts within their blog. This is helpful both from SEO purposes, as well as improving page views per visitor. Till now, WordPress did not provide any easy way of creating internal links. You had to separately find the post you want to link to, and then use Add Link feature to provide URL as well as title. This was really a pain. In WordPress 3.1 this pain will go away. Link box will be enhanced so that you can also search for a post right there, and just click on a result to link to that. This indeed will be one of my favorite feature when WordPress 3.1 comes out (if you can’t wait for it, Link to Post plugin provides similar feature already).
Column Sorting in Admin Panel: This is another long awaited feature. When you are in “Posts” section, you will be able to click on column headers to sort all the posts by that. This makes it really easy to search the posts you are looking for (I am still wondering what took WordPress so long to add this feature).
Better Paging in Admin Panel: This is actually the one that frustrates me most. If I have to go to page 4 in Admin panel, there is no easy way to do it. I have to click on next to go to each page individually. This problem will also go away in WordPress 3.1, and you will be able to navigate to any page directly by just providing its page number.
Some other features that are coming in WordPress 3.1 are:
- Better support for IE9
- Ajax powered search results (in dashboard).
- Revision in Blue color scheme.
There is no word yet on when WordPress 3.1 will be out, but I am eagerly looking forward to it. If you want to try out a beta version, you will have to try that in WordPress.com, as the beta is available for WordPress.com users right now. You can create a free blog in WordPress.com, and try that out.
Good job WordPress team!
