Note: This offer has now expired. However, 1&1 keeps coming up with similar offers for cheap .Com domain names. One of their offers which I have seen lasting longest is about .Com domains for just $0.99 for first year. That is quite a steal considering the fact that .Com domains normally go around $10 per year. The good part is that they give privacy protection (anonymous registration) also free, while most of other hosts (like Go Daddy) charge separately for that. So, 1&1 does remains my preferred choice for domain registrations, but it does needs to improve its customer dashboard a lot. I still get confused doing simple things, like, updating DNS. Other than that, 1&1 is a good choice.
Another favorite choice that I have is Dreamhost. They also include private registration for free and charge a flat fee of around $10 per year. Dashboard is much nicer than 1&1. So, if you are not looking for any special offers, then you can give Dreamhost a try. I would stick with Dreamhost only for domain registration, and not website hosting, though, because of my previous not so good experience with them.
