Facebook has launched new Places directory. Using this Places directory, users can find best hotels, restaurants, public attractions, cafes, bars, arts & entertainment, schools, gyms, landmarks, movie theaters, etc., for a particular city.
You simply need to enter the city name and it will provide you search results, starting with Restaurants. Top level restaurants, hotels, cafes, etc. are provided and ranking of the places is provided by user ratings.
You can access Facebook page of any place to check likes and comments, address, contact details of that particular place. This could be handy when you are roaming in another city, as you can find the best suited place for yourself.
In the above screenshot, you can see results about Cafes provided by this places directory for a particular city.
However, I won’t say that it could be a strong replacement for other local search maps, sites, etc. It has shortcoming that it can’t provide search results for a particular locality; only city name with country can be used for discovering the places. Secondly, only those places that have their Facebook page are shown in results.
Use Facebook’s New Places Directory:
To use this new places directory, access its URL using this link. On new places directory page, enter the name of city on search box, and press enter.
Search result will start with Restaurants tab and highly rated restaurants with a photo will be visible to you. You can see all restaurants using the option available on the right side. Scrolling down the page will show you some hotels, then bars, cafe, and so on. You can also move to these options using the tabs available for each option.
When you want to search for a particular place, say a restaurant, simply click on See all restaurants option. After this, list of all restaurants, their ratings, map location, address, and other information will be visible to you. You can open Facebook page of any restaurant and check users’ comments.
New Places Directory is a nice addition to Facebook. Still, it needs improvements. The good thing is that you can check user reviews about a particular place and can also discover a new place that you might not be aware till now.
